Clerk’s Office Warns Public of Widespread Traffic Ticket Text Scam

The Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers (FCCC) has been alerted to a recent scam involving fraudulent text messages falsely claiming that recipients have outstanding traffic tickets. These messages warn that failure to pay immediately will result in being reported to the DMV violation database, leading to suspension of vehicle registration and driving privileges. The text includes a deceptive link to collect fraudulent payments.

Currently, the extent of the scam’s reach is still being assessed. However, FCCC has received confirmed reports of the scam circulating in Levy, Flagler, and Citrus counties. “We urge residents to remain vigilant and never click on suspicious links or share personal or payment information in response to unsolicited messages,” said Clerk Crystal K. Kinzel.

Facts to remember:

  • Legitimate notices about traffic citations are typically sent by mail or accessed through official county or state websites.
  • Clerks of Court do not send unsolicited text messages demanding payment.
  • Suspicious texts should be reported immediately.

What You Should Do:

  • Do not click on any links in the message.
  • Do not provide personal or financial information.
  • Report suspicious messages to your local law enforcement agency and your county Clerk’s office.

FCCC and local Clerks’ offices are actively monitoring the situation and working with authorities to ensure public awareness and safety.
