Be Cautious Of Door-to-Door Solicitors

As the weather warms and more residents spend time outdoors, it’s common to see an increase in door-to-door solicitation. While many solicitors represent legitimate businesses, it’s important to stay cautious and informed before agreeing to any service or signing any documents.

Door-to-door sales can sometimes involve high-pressure tactics, “today only” offers, or requests for immediate payment. Residents should never feel rushed into making a decision. Always take the time to research the company, verify credentials, and read contracts carefully before signing anything.

In Collier County, individuals and businesses engaging in door-to-door solicitation are required to obtain the appropriate local business tax receipt (often referred to as a license). Reputable solicitors should be able to provide proof of registration upon request. If a solicitor cannot produce proper documentation, residents are encouraged to decline the service and report concerns to local law enforcement or the appropriate county office.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Ask for identification with a photo
  • View their solicitation permit & match the name to ID provided.
  • Do not share personal or financial information at the door.
  • Avoid making on-the-spot payments, especially in cash.
  • Take time to review contracts thoroughly.
  • Contact the company directly before committing.

Remember, you have the right to say no and close the door. Being informed and cautious can help from protect you scams and unwanted services.
