Upholding the Oath: A Commitment to Constitutional Service

As Clerk and Comptroller of Collier County, I am bound by an oath that reflects the foundational responsibilities of this constitutional office. This oath is not ceremonial; it is a binding statement of legal and operational accountability that governs my role in upholding both state and federal law. The oath reads:

“I do solemnly swear that I will support, protect and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States and of the State of Florida; that I am qualified to hold office under the constitution of the state, and that I will well and faithfully perform at all times the duties of Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller, Collier County, on which I am now about to enter, so help me God.”

In this capacity, I am required to:

  • Support, protect, and defend the U.S. Constitution and the Florida Constitution.
  • Confirm qualification under Florida’s constitutional requirements.
  • Execute duties with professionalism, independence, objectivity, and nonpartisanship.
  • Avoid financial, employment, or business conflicts as defined by law.
  • Adhere to the standards of conduct outlined in Chapters 112 and 350, Florida Statutes.

This framework ensures transparency, accountability, and integrity in the execution of the Clerk and Comptroller’s duties. From court services and official records to financial oversight and public accountability, every function performed by this office is rooted in the constitutional oath taken at the outset of service.

As we observe Constitution Month, it is important to highlight that this oath is not merely a prerequisite to holding office. It is a continuous legal and ethical obligation to serve within the boundaries of law, to maintain public trust, and to safeguard the integrity of our governmental institutions.
