Stay Safe, Stay Secure: Hurricane Prep & Fraud Protection

As hurricane season approaches, residents of Southwest Florida must prepare not only for the physical impacts of storms but also for the rise in fraudulent activity that often follows in their wake. Collier County is taking a proactive approach to both — helping residents stay safe and secure with vital resources for disaster readiness and fraud prevention.

Be Hurricane Ready: Preparation Can Save Lives

Hurricane season runs from June through November, and early preparation is essential. Whether you’re a long-time resident or new to the area, reviewing your emergency plans now can make all the difference when a storm is approaching.

Key Steps to Take:

  • Know Your Evacuation Zone: Collier County offers detailed maps and updates at colliercountyfl.gov. If you live in a flood-prone or low-lying area, understand your evacuation routes and nearby shelters.
  • Create a Supply Kit: Include essentials such as bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, medications, cash, important documents, and a battery-powered weather radio.
  • Prepare Your Property: Secure outdoor items, check your roof and shutters, and clear gutters and drains to prevent water damage.
  • Stay Connected: Sign up for official emergency notifications through Alert Collier, the county’s mass notification system for real-time updates.

Protect Your Property: Collier County’s Free Fraud Alert System

In the aftermath of storms, fraud attempts often increase. Criminals may exploit vulnerable situations by targeting homeowners with deceptive repair offers or attempting to illegally transfer property ownership.

To combat this, the Collier County Clerk of the Circuit Court offers a Fraud Alert System, a free tool that notifies you when documents — like deeds or mortgages — are recorded under your name in public records.

How It Works:

  • You receive a text, phone call, or email when your name is used on a newly recorded document.
  • If something seems suspicious, you’ll have the chance to act quickly and notify authorities.

Sign Up Is Simple:

  • Go to CollierClerk.com/FraudAlert
  • Enter your name and contact information.
  • Get alerts in real time — and stay one step ahead of scammers.

Storms may be unpredictable, but preparation and vigilance are within our control. By combining smart hurricane prep with the security of the Collier County Fraud Alert System, you can protect your home, your family, and your peace of mind.

Let’s weather the season together!
