South Naples Citrus Grove Rezoning Draws Extensive Public Comment at County Commission Meeting

At the January 13, 2026 board meeting, County Commissioners considered agenda items related to a proposed rezoning and development request for the South Naples Citrus Grove, located near Sabal Palm Road. The proposal involves approximately 160 acres and would allow for the construction of up to 423 residential units, including 100 affordable housing units.

The items generated significant public interest, with a large number of residents providing public comment both in person and in writing. Speakers addressed a range of topics, including land use compatibility, environmental considerations, water management, traffic, infrastructure capacity, and public safety.

Several members of the public expressed concerns regarding the site’s proximity to environmentally sensitive lands, including wildlife habitat and conservation areas. Others raised questions about stormwater management, flooding, wildfire risk, and the potential impact of increased development on nearby communities. Additional comments focused on preserving agricultural land and the area’s rural character.

Supporters of the proposal highlighted the need for additional housing in Collier County and emphasized property rights and economic considerations. They noted that the site has long been used for agricultural purposes and argued that development could be planned in a manner consistent with county regulations and infrastructure requirements.

Following discussion and deliberation, the Board did not take final action to approve or deny the request. Instead, commissioners voted to continue the item to a future meeting to allow the developer & prop owner to work with the public for a better solution.
