As hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, residents of Collier County must be prepared long before a storm is on the radar. Early preparation not only protects lives and property but also helps our community recover faster. Here’s what you need to know about hurricane preparedness and the resources available to help you stay safe.
Be Informed and Stay Alert
- Collier County Emergency Management is the lead agency in storm preparation and response. Residents are encouraged to:
- Sign up for Alert Collier, the county’s emergency notification system, to receive real-time updates via phone, text, or email
- Download the Collier Cares app, which provides official emergency information and community resources.
- Follow trusted sources on social media, including Collier County Emergency Management and local law enforcement, for updates before, during, and after a storm
Create an Emergency Plan
- Start by identifying your evacuation zone and nearest shelter. Collier County’s website offers a GIS-based tool to help you determine if you live in an evacuation zone. Discuss evacuation plans with your family, including pet accommodations and communication methods.
- For those with medical conditions or disabilities, the Special Needs Shelter Program provides a safe environment during storms. Registration is required in advance through the Collier County Emergency Management Office.
Build a Hurricane Supply Kit
- Non-perishable food and bottled water (one gallon per person per day) Medications and first aid supplies
- Flashlights, batteries, and a weather radio
- Important documents (IDs, insurance papers, medical records) in a waterproof container Cash (ATMs may not work after a storm)
- Items for babies and pets (diapers, formula, leashes, pet food) Masks, hand sanitizer, and other hygiene supplies
Protect Your Home
- Trim trees and clear yard debris regularly
- Install storm shutters or board up windows with plywood Bring outdoor furniture and loose items inside
- Check your insurance coverage and document your property with photos or videos
- Residents in gated or private communities should ensure their associations submit a Right of Entry Form to allow the county access for post-storm debris removal.
Know Where to Go
- Collier County operates multiple hurricane shelters, including pet-friendly locations. Shelter openings will be announced by emergency officials. The United Way of Collier and the Keys provides evacuation maps and checklists to help you plan.
- If you do not feel safe in your home and are not under a mandatory evacuation order, consider staying with friends or family in safer areas before turning to a public shelter.
