Leadership Collier Government Day

Leadership Collier’s Government Day offered participants an immersive, behind-the-scenes look at how local, regional, and state government systems work together to shape Collier County. The day began at the Collier County Courthouse with an overview of the county’s governmental history from former legislator Garrett Richter. Judge Janeice Martin and a treatment court alumni discussed how problem-solving courts use “compassionate accountability” to transform lives and improve community safety.

Participants then explored courtroom roles and processes with Judge Deborah Cunningham before touring the courthouse and meeting with myself and County Commissioner staff. The group traveled to the Supervisor of Elections Office, where Supervisor Melissa Blazier provided an inside look at the technology, security, and practices that ensure election integrity in Collier County.

The afternoon shifted to emergency preparedness with tours of the Emergency Operations Center and 911 dispatch. Dan Summers, Eloy Ricardo, and Brent Loewel highlighted the critical coordination among first responders and agencies during major emergencies and the lessons learned from past disasters.

Participants ended the day by networking with local and county elected officials, taking part in a panel discussion on effective policymaking and inter-agency collaboration, and hearing County Manager Amy Patterson provide an overview of county operations. The experience concluded with a mock commission meeting on affordable housing, which encouraged participants to stay informed, involved, and active in shaping the community’s future.
