This past week we lost a great County Commissioner and friend, Donna Fiala.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"I met Donna Fiala in the early 1990s when she was selected as a Sheriff\u2019s Commissioner for then-Sheriff Don Hunter. As Finance Director for the Sheriff\u2019s Office, I made presentations to the group on numerous topics for the Sheriff. Donna and I bonded over our Ohio roots and a bit of German food (I hope to be able to follow that noodle kugel recipe without her). Over the more than 30+ years, I was blessed to have her friendship and guidance.<\/p>\n

When Donna first chose to run for Office, I knew she would be great! Her passion for the community and her focus on the issues in East Naples was incredible. Over the past few days in honoring her, there have been many stories of her accomplishments, her family and friends.<\/p>\n

\"\"During my career here in Collier, Donna was not only my friend but counselor, mentor, and great example of how to serve the community. We spent many Saturday or Sunday afternoons prior to the BCC meeting, working on the Board\u2019s agenda over coffee, tea and desserts in her dining room.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t always agree, but we always understood the issues and why we had differing opinions. Something that can be useful in any circumstance and could benefit many issues facing us these days. The value of maintaining relationships and working to resolve differences for the good of the community were great lessons.<\/p>\n

When I had to consider running for office due to the unexpected death of Dwight Brock, she said \u201cgo for it\u201d. Her encouragement and support gave me the confidence to try to make a difference by running. Her example of supporting the community is unrivaled and I aspire every day to uphold her legacy.<\/p>\n

\"\"My family and I were very blessed to visit Donna at the Amish community in Ohio where she had a summer house. The great people that we met through Donna, and the experiences in the small community there, not only provided beautiful scenery and rest, but the opportunity first-hand to more deeply understand the Amish way of life. To this day my daughter enjoys the Amish culture and learning more about these very faithful friends.<\/p>\n

There have been many tears in the last few days but memories of Donna\u2019s accomplishments and service to the community will not be forgotten. As I wrote in a prior newsletter, I lost my Mom last year and the loss of another great woman is difficult. My memories of them will be with me forever. I loved them both and miss them.<\/p>\n
