To start of the year fresh, we are going to take a deeper dive into some specific skills or pieces of knowledge that will hopefully be useful to your professional and personal computing life. With that in mind, let’s begin with…

How to Properly Troubleshoot

One of the most important skills you can have as a frequent computer user (or even most trades in life) is the ability to troubleshoot a problem and find the solution “on your own”. There is a bit of emphasis on the “on your own” because these days with the availability of the Internet, you aren’t lost at sea.

Let’s set a hypothetical (but all too familiar) situation where you sit down at your desk and your monitor is showing a blank screen, despite being plugged in and powered on. Calling the local helpdesk for support might be your first thought (rightfully so) but perhaps you can diagnose the issue yourself. The first step to a successful troubleshoot is tapping into the knowledge you already have and thinking logically through the steps required to reach your desired solution.

In this scenario you know your computer is functional but decide to double check by unplugging it from your docking station and testing it alone. Lo and behold the screen on your laptop is working as intended, so you can rule it out as being a likely culprit. That narrows down the points of failure to:

The cable between your laptop and docking station

The docking station itself

The cable between the docking station and your monitor

The monitor itself

When you plug the laptop into the dock with your supplied cable and press the power button, you see the white light in the corner turn on indicating that both your laptop and the dock have power. This also means you can rule out that cable as being the problem. Next you power on your monitor and the ‘No Signal Detected’ message appears. Now you know the monitor itself is working properly but isn’t being detected by the dock or your laptop. The only remaining logical culprit would be the connection between your monitor and the dock – so you decide to double check the connections there and find out that the cable is loose on both ends. After resecuring it, almost like magic, your laptop content appears on your monitor, ready to go.

Let’s say you know that your monitor isn’t displaying your laptop’s contents properly but you’re not sure why or what to check. The second step to a successful troubleshoot is knowing where and how to find extra relevant information on a topic. Utilizing tools like Google (or even the helpdesk) to gain insight are crucial skills to have and unlocking their full potential is probably easier than you think.

The most straightforward way to get a quick answer is to go to Google Search and simply type in your query: “My computer monitor says, ‘No Signal Detected’”. The quotation marks are useful for returning results that specifically have the phrase in between them included. Often, you’ll have a handy guide that can walk you step by step within the first five results, especially these days where AI generated summaries of search result content is prominently displayed. These should of course always be taken with a grain of salt and double checked for accuracy.

Read and download the January 2025 Newsletter here.

At the end of 2024 we discussed the importance of keeping your I.T. skills ‘up to par’ and the resources …

[1
1037,166,1401,1396,1400,1399
post-18109","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-and-announcements","tag-clerks-it","tag-collier-clerk","tag-how-to-properly-troubleshoot","tag-january-2025-newsletter","tag-skills-to-learn-this-year","tag-troubleshooting","infinite-scroll-item","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-25","resize-featured-image
["GET
