RESOLUTION NO. 93-~
A RESOLUTION BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
OF COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA IN OPPOSITION TO ANY
OFFSHORE bIL ExPLORATION OR DRILLING PROJECTS
OFF FLORIDA'S WEST COAST.
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Interior continues
to consider a leasing program to conduct lease sales in nearby
oltshore waters ott the west coast ot Florida and are proposing to
lilt the current moratorium; and
WHEREAS, the Board ot County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida is unilaterally opposed to any offshore oil exploration
and drilling projects of Florida's west coast, even it a buffer
zone is established; and
WHEREAS, it ie the belief of the Board of County
Commissioners that an implied buffer zone offers literally no
protection to the west coast of Florida in the event of a disaster
associated with oil exploration and drilling projects; and
WHEREAS, the west coast of Florida is a public asset and a
resource that requires continued protection and it is essential to
preserve and protect this valuable natural resource by eliminating
potential disastrous impacts that could occur due to ottshore oil
exploration and drilling; and
WHEREAS, Collier County'S major industries ~re tourism and
fishing and an oil spill off the coast of Florida would have
severe and long-term, it not permanent, impacts on our economy and
quality of life. We all need ,.to be vitally concerned with the
importance of preserving the integrity of our coastline and
immensely productive bays and estuaries.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BO~PD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
1. We hereby urgently request that all authorities involved
1n the decision making process which could allow offshore oil
exploration and drilling along Florida's west coast take every
action necessary to deny any such request, to establish a

permanent moratorium, and to oppose all future plans for oil
