I. . , \' -' Collier County; and, JULY 6, 1989 RESOLUTION 89 - ~ A RESOLUTION OBJECTING TO OIL DRl~LING AND EXPLORATION OFF THE COAST OF FLORIDA: REQUESTING THE MINERALS MANAGEHEHT SERVICE, THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR, AND THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO OPPOSE PLANS FOR ANY SUCH DRILLING AND EXPLORATION; AUTHORIZING DISTRIBUTION; AND PROVIDING AH EFFECTIVE Dl\TE. WHEREAS, the United States Depa1.-tment of the Interior is currently considering the lease of federal waters in the Gul! ot Mexico, tor petroleum exploration and devolopment, that may include areas offshore from Collier County; and, WHEREAS, offshore petroleum exploration and development presents a serious throat to the native Coastal ecosystems at WHEREAS, Collier County's coastline supports a substantial commercial and recreational fishinq industry; and, WHEREAS, Collier Co~nty's coastline supports a substantial tourJsm industry; and, WHEREAS, part of Collier County's coastline is owned by the citizens of Florida, and maintained by the State Department ot Natural Resources as State Prosorve area; and, WHEREAS, part of Collier County's coastline is owned by the citizens of the Uni.ted States, and maintained by the United States Department of the Interior as National Park area; and, WHEREAS, offsho~e petroleum development would increase the possibility of compromise to the ecology of beach and shore systems, native habitats, and local economy, by petroleum pollution. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the President's Outer Continental Shelf Leasing and Development Task Force, the Minerals Management Service, the Secretary of the Interior, and the United states Congress is requested to oppose plans tor offshore exploration and petroleum development in any waters ot -1- Q~d. /-Ij.
