Backup Documents 11/09/2021 Item # 4G 4G PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, approximately half of the population will have a period every month for decades of their lives; and WHEREAS, period poverty is not having access to a sufficient supply of feminine products in order to fully participate in daily life; and WHEREAS, despite the fact that personal hygiene is not a luxury but a basic need, period supplies are not covered by state or federal assistance programs including food stamps (SNAP); and WHEREAS, national research reports that 1 in 4 women struggle with period poverty and miss school or work, or resort to unsafe and unhygienic methods that can cause health issues; and WHEREAS, the Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL recognizes that addressing period poverty can enhance economic opportunity and improve health by ensuring all people have access to the basic necessities required to thrive and reach their full potential; and WHEREAS, since January 2019 the Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL has distributed over 2 million pads in our community and is working to increase distribution to support this need. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that November 8 - 14, 2021, be designated as PERIOD POVERTY AWARENESS WEEK IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 9th Day of November 2021.
