Backup Documents 05/25/2021 Item #16H4 16H4 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, every day, more than 100 Americans are killed by gun violence, alongside more than 230 who are shot and wounded, and on average there are more than 13,000 gun homicides every year; and WHEREAS, Florida has 2,752 gun deaths every year, with a rate of 12.5 deaths per 100,000 people and has the 27" highest rate of gun deaths in the US; and WHEREAS, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a national non-partisan organization working towards ending the epidemic of gun violence in America and is comprised of local groups all over the United States, including in the cities of Orlando, Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tampa, and Gainesville; and WHEREAS, Southwest Florida Moms Demand Action group was founded in 2014 by Naples attorney and mom, Katherine Cunningham, and is comprised of moms, dads, teachers, attorneys, law enforcement, doctors, mental health workers and more; and WHEREAS, Southwest Florida Moms Demand Action meets with members of our state legislative and congressional delegations in conjunction with Advocacy Day in Tallahassee; and WHEREAS, Moms Demand Action works to prevent child gun deaths and injuries through the "Be SMART" program. The "Be SMART" framework is designed to help parents and adults normalize conversations about gun safety and take responsible actions that prevent child gun deaths and injuries. Southwest Florida Moms Demand Action shares this information through presentations to civic groups throughout Collier County, sending "Be SMART" cards to parents of newborns, providing "Be SMART' cards with school supply donations, and participating in local events such as Boo at the Zoo, Girls on the Run, the Association for Prevention of Suicide, and more; NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that all Collier County residents are encouraged to support local efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence, and that June 4, 2021, be designated as NATIONAL GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS DAY IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 25th Day of May, 2021.
