Backup Documents 05/11/2021 Item #16H2 I4HZ PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, recreational boating is fun and enjoyable, and we are fortunate to have sufficient resources to accommodate the wide variety of pleasure boating demands. While being a marvelous source of recreation, boating to the unprepared can be a risky sport; and WHEREAS, on average, 600 people die each year in boating-related accidents in the U.S.; approximately 79% of these are fatalities caused by drowning, and of those drowning, 86% were not wearing a life jacket; and WHEREAS, a significant number of boaters who lose their lives by drowning each year would be alive today had they worn their life jackets; and WHEREAS, knowledge and skills are important in reducing human error and improving judgment. When people are aware of the risk, they are likely to take the precautionary measures to protect themselves and their friends and family; NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that May 22-28, 2021, be designated as NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 11 th Day of May 2021.
