Backup Documents 04/13/2021 Item #16H2 16H2 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the Holocaust Museum & Janet G. and Harvey D. Cohen Education Center teaches the lessons of the Holocaust to inspire action against bigotry, hatred and violence, and preserves the personal stories of local Southwest Florida residents who were Holocaust Survivors and Camp Liberators for future generations; and WHEREAS, the Museum offers age-appropriate student programming for grades K-12 and for college and university students in six Southwest Florida counties; offers Education Workshops to Southwest Florida teachers as a Designated Site of the Florida Department of Education Commissioner's Task Force on Holocaust Education; hosts special temporary exhibits, and virtually hosts (during COVID-19) community discussions about Holocaust History and Human Rights issues, films and books; and WHEREAS, the Holocaust Museum encourages all to understand the impact that our choice of behavior, words and actions may have on ourselves and others; to realize that each of us can and should endeavor to make a positive difference, whatever our circumstances, in our families, schools, communities and the larger world; and WHEREAS, despite the saying "Never Again", that millions of innocent people around the world are still persecuted because of their race, religion, ethnicity, national origin and other characteristics; and WHEREAS, to prevent future genocides and atrocities, local and worldwide awareness must be raised so that innocent people are protected, perpetrators are prosecuted and those who suffer persecution around the world are never forgotten; and WHEREAS, we realize that we all have the opportunity and obligation as fellow human beings to speak out on behalf of those who cannot speak up for themselves for fear of retaliation and violence; NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that April 2021 be recognized as GENOCIDE AWARENESS MONTH IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 13''d Day of April 2021.
