Backup Documents 02/09/2021 Item #16H1 1 6H i PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, The American Public Health Association has awarded Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council (SWFRPC) a Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge grant of $100,000.00; and WHEREAS, SWFRPC initiated the Collier County Food Policy Council on July 1, 2020 which includes a Steering Committee comprised of partners from the SWFRPC, Blue Zones Project - Southwest Florida, Collier County Department of Health, Florida Gulf Coast University, and University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Services; and WHEREAS, according to a 2016 Data Report published by the Florida Department of Health, 37.2% of Collier County residents are categorized as overweight. In 2013, only 33% of residents within the county received the same diagnosis; and WHEREAS, during the past 6 months, the Collier County Food Policy Council has been successful in building communication and partnerships across sectors to help ensure a resilient food supply. The Collier County Food Policy Council is currently working on efforts to improve public health and prevent chronic disease through nutritionally sound practices that are supported by research; NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed that the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida recognizes the accomplishments achieved by the Collier County Food Policy Council to encourage that quality, fresh foods are available locally; to promote the efficient use of land and the preservation and conservation of agriculture; to support reduction in food transportation; and to provide educational resources for the community.
