Agenda 11/10/2020 Item #16H 2 (Proclamation - Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Week in Collier County)16.H.2 11 / 10/2020 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are serious, chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract with no cause or cure; and WHEREAS, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease, afflicts approximately 3 million people in the United States, 25% of whom were diagnosed as children, with numbers rising every day; and WHEREAS, the unpredictable nature of these painful and debilitating digestive diseases create a significant burden on the community and the economy, more than billions of dollars in direct and indirect costs annually in the United States, according to the American Gastroenterological Association; and WHEREAS, individuals affected by these diseases are at a high risk for developing colorectal cancer; and WHEREAS, a lack of awareness among health professionals and the general public may contribute to misdiagnosis and mismanagement of these diseases; and WHEREAS, the goals of the Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Week are to encourage people to join the effort to find a cure, engage in activities aimed at raising awareness, promote and support biomedical research and provide support to individuals and families coping with the disease; and WHEREAS, the Crohn's Charity Service Foundation of Collier County and the State of Florida will continue to bring awareness of this proclamation to all; NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that December 1 through 7, 2020 be designated as CROHN'S AND COLITIS AWARENESS WEEK IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS loth Day of November, 2020.
