EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve a grant award in the amount of $10,500 from the Collier County
Community Foundation for a Shade Structure and recognition plaque at the Tigertail Beach
Playground and authorize all necessary Budget Amendments. (Net Fiscal impact $10,500)
OBJECTIVE: To secure grant funding to enhance the playground at Tigertail Beach.
CONSIDERATIONS: Shading young visitors from the hot Florida sun while they play will reduce
exposure to UV rays that are detrimental to young children. It is anticipated that upon completion of the
shade structure, over the playground, the ambient temperature under the shade structure versus an
unshaded area will be reduced by twenty (20) degrees Fahrenheit.
On January 28, 2020, the Board of County Commissioners (Board) approved an “After-the-Fact” grant
application from the Collier County Community Foundation for a shade structure at the Tigertail Beach
Playground.
On February 6, 2020, the Collier County Parks and Recreation Division received a grant award in the
amount of $10,500 from the Collier County Community Foundation for the design, permitting, and
construction of the shade structure as well as an acknowledgment plaque to be displayed on site.
Although there is no required match, the overall cost of the shade structure and plaque is $15,500. The
Collier County Parks and Recreation Division will provide $5,000 from existing Tourist Development
Grant funding to cover the remaining balance of project costs.
The Collier County Parks and Recreation Division will maintain the shade structure once completed and
will seek to replace it as funds allow after the useful life of the shade structure has expired. It is
anticipated that the ongoing maintenance cost for the structure is estimated at $500 annually. The annual
maintenance cost will be paid from the Parks and Recreation annual operating budget.
FISCAL IMPACT: A Budget Amendment is required to recognize grant funding in the amount of
$10,500 in Public Services Grant Fund (709) Project 80388. While there is no requirement for a County
match, the total cost of the shade structure is estimated to be $15,500 leaving a $5,000 funding balance to
be provided from Tourist Development Tax supported Beach Park Facilities Fund (183), Project 80388,
(Tigertail Beach Playground Equipment).
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no Growth Management impact associated with this
Item.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This Item is approved for form and legality and requires a majority vote
for Board action. -JAB
