EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve the Sheriff’s Office FY2020 COPS Hiring Program grant.
OBJECTIVE: To request approval from the Board of County Commissioners to accept the FY2020
grant application under the COPS Hiring Program.
CONSIDERATION: The COPS Hiring Program provides federal funding to hire entry-level law
enforcement officers or rehire deputies who have been laid off or scheduled for lay -off as a result of
budget cuts.
There have been some modifications to the COPS Hiring guideli nes including the eligibility requirement
that stated that all local, state, and tribal law enforcement agencies that have primarily law enforcement
authority were eligible to apply. CCSO applied for the grant to add four entry-level law enforcement
officers.
FISCAL IMPACT: The COPS Hiring application requested the following funding:
Federal funding FY2020-2023: $500,000
Local match required FY2020-2023: $215,012
TOTAL grant: $715,012
The local match will come from Crime Prevention Funds, Confiscated Trust Funds, or other CCSO
funding sources. The CCSO will need to provide 100% of the salaries and benefits for the four law
enforcement positions for a minimum of 12-months after the end of the grant.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT: None
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to
form and legality, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
