Backup Documents 10/22/2019 Item # 4I 41 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the annual distribution of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has been officially recognized and endorsed by governmental leaders since 1922; and, WHEREAS, the Buddy Poppy is a simple red flower that was discovered in war devastated France in World War I, growing in Flanders Fields, and was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America, memorializing the deaths of American and Allied soldiers; and, WHEREAS, the VFW Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled veterans and the proceeds of this worthy fundraising campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of disabled and needy veterans and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans; and, WHEREAS, the purpose of the annual distribution of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars is eloquently reflected in the desire to "Honor the Dead by Helping the Living." NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that November 11, 2019, be designated as VFW Buddy Poppy Day in recognition of Veteran's Day, and urge all citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy as mute evidence of our gratitude to the men and women of this country who risked their lives in defense of the freedoms we continue to enjoy as American citizens.
