WHEREAS,
September is Hunger Action Month, a hunger awareness campaign started
by the Feeding America network of food banks, which includes the Harry
Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida, with September 12 designated
as Hunger Action Day; and,
WHEREAS,
Collier County is one of five Southwest Florida counties the Harry Chapin
Food Bank serves; and,
WHEREAS,
according to Feeding America's 2019 Map the Meal Gap study, Collier
County has approximately 36,120 people who are food insecure, which
means they may not know where their next meal is coming from, and
approximately 12,400 of those are children; and,
WHEREAS,
the Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed more than 5.6 million pounds of
food in Collier County in the last fiscal year, an 11 percent increase over
the year before; and,
WHEREAS,
the Harry Chapin Food Bank provides food to approximately 35 nonprofit
agencies in Collier County and through its mobile pantry program, called
Fulfill; and,
WHEREAS,
the Harry Chapin Food Bank has a 13,500 -square -foot Collier County
Center to provide more food, volunteer opportunities and space to
collaborate with the community; and,
WHEREAS,
the Harry Chapin Food Bank encourages Collier County citizens to continue
to volunteer, advocate and donate to help end hunger in Collier County.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that Thursday, September 12 be designated as
HUNGER ACTION DAY IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 10th Day of September 2019.
