APPOINTMENT OF MEMBER(S) TO THE LAND ACQUISITION ADVISORY
COMMITTEE
OBJECTIVE: To appoint 3 members to serve 3 year terms, expiring on February 11,2011, to
the Land Aequisition Advisory Committee.
CONSIDERATIONS: The Land Acquisition Advisory Committce has 3 terms expiring on
February 11, 2008. This 9-member eommittee was created by Ordinance No. 2002-63 and their
primary responsibility is to recommend to the BCC an Aetive Properties Aequisition List with
qualified purchase recommendations of environmentally sensitive lands consistent with the goals
ofthe Conservation Collier Land Aequisition Program. Membership of the eommittee shall
comprise broad and balanced representation including environmental and eonservation interests,
agricultural and business interests, edueational interests, and general civic and citizen interests
within the County. Members shall have expertise, knowledge or interest in ecology,
conservation of natural resourees, real estate or land acquisition, land appraisal, land
management, eco-tourism or environmental education. A list of the current membership is
included in the baekup.

The terms for Anthony P. Pires, William H. Poteet, Jr. and Stan Weiner will expire on February

Recommendation for Conservation Collier Committee appointments
On January 14, 2008, the Conservation Collier Land Acquisition Advisory Committee
(CCLAAC) met at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting and diseussed the applications of
five (5) persons to fill the upcoming vacancies for 3 terms due to expire on February 11,2008
(Bill Poteet, Tony Pires and Stan Weiner). All three currently serving members have applied to
be re-appointed and two additional outside applications (Jeffrey S. Curl and Jeffrey Robert
Schmid) were received.
After discussion, a motion was made and seconded for the CCLAAC to recommend the
individuals who applied in the following order of preference. The motion was approved by a 6
to 2 vote, with one CCLAAC member absent and not voting. The sitting members who applied
for re-appointment are identified below.

2. Tony Pires - re-appointment
3. Jeffrey S. Curl
4. Stan Weiner - re-appointment

effrey Schmid is an Environmental Research Manager with the Environmental Science Division at th
onservancy of Southwest Florida. Dr. Schmid has 22 years experience conducting scientific research
. western Florida, half of which was in Collier County. He has conducted mark-recapture surveys to
haracterize marine turtle aggregations in coastal waters and telemetry studies to determine the
ssential habitat of the critically-endangered Kemp's ridley turtle; analyzed past and present benthic
abitat distributions in Naples Bay using geographic information systems (GIS) and compared change
o predevelopment vegetation with present landuses in areas surrounding the bay; and participated in
'ldlife surveys to establish baseline parameters for Everglades restoration projects and to investigate
e function of a uatic refu ia in the South Florida ecos stem.
