OBJECTIVE: For the Board of County Commissioners to declare a valid public purpose for a Commissioner to attend function/event and approve payment by the Clerk. CONSIDERATIONS: Pursuant to resolution No. 99-410, the Board of County Commissioners has determined that attendance at the functions of fraternal, business, environmental, educational, charitable, social, professional, trade, homeowners, ethnic, and civic associations/organizations serves a valid public purpose, provided that said functions reasonably relate to Collier County matters. COMMISSIONER: Frank Halas FUNCTIONIEVENT: Rookery Bay Luncheon Meeting, held at Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center, on Thursday. January 31. 2008. PUBLIC PURPOSE: Meet and interact with community leaders to discuss impacts and adaptations to climate change. DATE OF FUNCTION/EVENT: January 31, 2008 FISCAL IMPACT: $7.00 Funds to be paid from Commissioner's travel budget. RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners, in accordance with resolution No. 99-410, approve reimbursement by the Clerk for meals provided to Commissioner Frank Halas while serving a valid public purpose. The lunch discussion will include a 15-minute film entitled "The Climate of Change" produced by ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability, and an opportunity to share ideas and perspectives on climate change with leadership colleagues from the private and public sector. The Rookery Bay Reserve is one of over a thousand organizations around the nation participating in a national leach-in on climate change. Focus the Nation on January 31, has been designated for a national dialogue to bring community leaders, students, and the general public together to learn more about the impacts of climate change and opportunities to engage in meaningful ways to help address this important global issue. All seminars and presentations at the Rookery Bay Reserve on January 31 are free of charge. For more information on the national event, see www.focusthenation.org. In addition to the leadership lunch meeting, we are hosting a seminar on the same day beginning at 12:30 pm at the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center presented by Don Miller from the Climate Project entitled "Climate Change in the Sunshine State" based on AI Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth. Rookery Bay is hosting this Focus the Nation event in partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University.
