EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
COMMISSIONER REQUEST FOR BOARD APPROVAL FOR PAYMENT TO
ATTEND FUNCTION SERVING A VALID PUBLIC PURPOSE
OBJECTIVE: For the Board of County Commissioners to declare a valid public
purpose for a Commissioner to attend function/event and approve payment by the Clerk.
CONSIDERATIONS: Pursuant to Resolution No. 99-410, the Board of County
Commissioners has determined that attendance at the functions of fraternal, business,
environmental, educational, charitable, social, professional, trade, homeowners, ethnic,
and civic association/organ.izations serves a valid public purpose, provided that said
functions reasonably relate to Collier County matters.
COMMISSIONER: Commissioner Fiala
FUNCTION/EVENT: CREW Land & Water Trust Membership
PUBLIC PURPOSE: To support and be involved in the CREW Land & Water Trust
and be reimbursed for current membership and to network with constituents.
DATE OF FUNCTION/EVENT: Wednesday, February 20,2008
FISCAL IMPACT: $25.00 Funds to be paid from Commissioner's travel budget.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners, in accordance with
Resolution No. 99-410, approve payment by the Clerk for Commissioner Fiala to attend
function serving a valid public purpose.

Thank you for being a member of the Friends of CREW, Your support and involvement has enabled us to
continue with our mission to preserve and protect the water resources and natural communities in and
around the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW). In today's climate of commercial and
residential growth, conservation and environmental outreach are even more important than ever. Your
continued support will enable us to move into 2008 with the emphasis on:

. Environmental Education - Our education and outreach programs include teacher workshops,
student hikes, public hike5 and participation in community special events.
. Land Acquisition - We will continue the acquisition of more land, such as the 360 acre Starnes
Property adjacent to the CREW Marsh. There are already more than 42,000 acres in preservation,
including Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary!
. Science - Our association with Florida Gulf Coast University continues through education,
outreach and research.
. Recreation Facilities - In addition to the maintenance of the existing CREW Marsh trail system,
we will expand hiking and biking opportunities with trails along the old trams at Bird Rookery
Swamp.
. Land Management - Prescribed bums and exotic removal are an integral part of managing and
protecting the CREW lands.
. Wildlife Management - Wildlife monitoring and native vegetation plantings continue to improve
wildlife habitat.
Your continued partnership will enable us to continue in 2008 to preserve and protect this watershed from
increasing outside pressure and to educate the public about its importance. Will you consider renewing
