WHEREAS, Autism is a camplex neurabialaglcal disorder that typically lasts thraughout
a person's life and inhibits a person's obility to cammunicate and develap
social relationships. and ;s often accompanied by extreme behavioral
challenges: and,
WHEREAS, J in J 50 individuals is diagnosed with Autism in the United States, making
it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined:
and,
WHEREAS, the diagnosis of Autism has increased tenfold in the last decade with a
new child being diagnosed every ZO minutes and J. 7 million individuals in
the United States living with an Autism spectrum disorder: and,
WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called Autism a
national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown: and,
WHEREAS, early diagnosis, research, and intervention are critical components to
pravide families with necessary skills to support individuals diagnosed with
Autism and related disabilities: and,
WHEREAS, April Z, Z008 is designated as the First Annual World Autism Awareness
Day by The United Nations General Assembly.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board af County Commissioners af Callier
County, Florida, that April ZooB, be designated as Autism Awareness
Month and is praud to join Autism Speaks: lacal prafessionals and parents
that are working diligently to combat Autism. increase funding for
research, raise awareness about Autism and its effect on individuals.
