EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Commissioner request for Board approval for payment to attend function serving a valid
public purpose.
OBJECTIVE: For the Board of County Commissioners to declare a valid public purpose for a
Commissioner to attend function/event and approve payment by the Clerk.
CONSIDERATIONS: Pursuant to resolution No. 99-410, the Board of County Commissioners
has determined that attendance at the functions of fraternal, business, environmental,
educational, charitable, social, professional, trade, homeowners, ethnic, and civic
associations/organizations serves a valid public purpose, provided that said functions reasonably
relate to Collier County matters.
COMMISSIONER: Frank Halas
FUNCTIONIEVENT: Economic Development Council VIP Breakfast at The Naples Grande
Beach Resort on May I, 2008
PUBLIC PURPOSE: Meet and interact with local business and community leaders.
DATE OF FUNCTION/EVENT: May 1,2008
FISCAL IMPACT: $28.00 Funds to be paid from Commissioner's travel budget.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners, in accordance with
resolution No. 99-410, approve payment by the Clerk for Commissioner Halas to attend function
serving a valid public purpose.

We invite you to be our guest at the next EDC VIP Breakfast on Thursday, May 1, 2008. The Naples
Grande Beach Resort has generously agreed to sponsor this program which will begin at 7:30am.
As you may know, the VIP Breakfast Series is a special member benefit for EDC investors at the
Benefactor, Foundations and Premier Investment Levels. This event has been enthusiastically received
and has been acknowledged as a great opportunity to breakfast with some of EDC member investor
CEO's and key decision makers. Having the chance to hear outstanding speakers discuss their life
experiences and share their business acumen has given extra insight to apply to our everyday business
life.
The featured speaker on May 1, 2008 is Michael London, former executive vice president of Best Buy.
Responsible for global sourcing and alliances, Mr. London led areas vital to the company's business,
e.g., fulfilling consumer and business needs with quality products and services and maximizing financial
results while working with a vast array of domestic and international suppliers.
The 34-year retail veteran focused on innovation, differentiation and execution as he worked to
understand his customers while balancing the impact of fast-moving technological innovations,
customer insights and his rich knowledge of retailing.
An innovative leader, London has the ability to motivate and mobilize teams of talented individuals to
achieve great results. The insights he provides to these individuals, combined with a "make it happen"
attitude, enabled his people to seek and quickly achieve results that otherwise may have not been
thought possible.
Since retiring in August of 2006, Mike London has established his own consulting firm and has worked
with Polaroid as interim CEO, Toys R US and Accenture.
London, a graduate of Duke University, is in the Consumer Electronics Division of the Anti-Defamation
League for which he has received national recognition. He serves on the Foundation Board of Hodges
University and on the Board of the Lee County Boys and Girls Club.

I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner, but I was waiting to hear from the hotel. As you know, our member
hotels sponsor the VIP Breakfasts and, therefore, we do not charge attendees. If there was a cost for the guests It
would be $28.00. Checks should be made payable to the Naples Grande.
