WHEREAS, Maria Stone is a teacher with over 45 years of experience; and,
WHEREAS, Maria Stone has traveled extensively the world over and written about her
many adventures, sponsoring students from foreign countries for extended
Periods,. and,
WHEREAS, Maria Stare wrote many children "s books, as well as books on Florida hlstary,
novels, poetry and music; and,
WHEREAS, Maria Stone and her husband, Peter, made it their mission and life -long goal
to educate Florida's children to learn the rich folk history of Florida's first
families and earliest settlers; and,
WHEREAS, Maria Stone was compelled to capture the folk stories of the real people who
tamed Naples, telling their stories in their own words and ways in her many
books; and,
WHEREAS, Maria Stone's collection of books includes 'The Coxambas Kid ", "Ochopee, the
Story of the Smallest Post Office ", "The End of the Oxcart Trail'; 'Old
Soldiers have Nine Lives ", "We Also Came" 'The Tamlami Troll ", and "Swamp
Buggy Fever" which illustrates the history of the Swamp Buggy and was
featured in an A 4 E one -hour documentary; and,
WHEREAS, Maria Stone was presented with the Key to the City of Names on June 18,
2008; and,
WHEREAS, Maria Stone has devoted her life to selfless giving as a starytelier and
philanthropist.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that .iuly 22, 2008, be designated as
MARIA STONE DAY
to honor her many contributions to Naples and Collier County, Florida.
