PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, spanning centuries, cultures, and continents, domestic violence is a tragic
epidemic that has plagued our society, having devastating effects on
countless numbers of women and children, and,
WHEREAS, domestic violence permeates the lives and compromises the safety of
thousands of Collier County citizens each day with tragic, destructive, and
sometimes fatal results; and,
WHEREAS, the problems of domestic violence are not confined to any one r ��er 23, 2008
people, but affect people across a// economic status, race, and �pol f 2
sexual orientation, culture and society, and are supported by societal
indifference; and,
WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individuals privacy, dignity,
security, and humanity due to systemic use of physical, emotional, sexual,
psychological, and economic control and /or abuse; and,
WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is wide - ranging, directly affecting women,
children, men, and society as a whole; and,
WHEREAS, The She /ter for Abused Women d Children has provided support, safety,
and advocacy to domestic violence survivors and their chi ldren since 1989;
and,
WHEREAS, Collier County is committed to taking a firm position against domestic
violence and will remain focused on ensuring that women and children are
safe in their homes and abusers are held accountable for their crimes.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that October, 2008, be designated as
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
