EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Approve a budget amendment to increase the budget for nnemployment compensation
expenses by $315,000.
OBJECTIVE: Approval from the Board of County Commissioners to process a budget
amendment in the amount of $315,000 to fund Collier County unemployment compensation
expenses.
CONSIDERATIONS: The County is invoiced by the State for actual unemployment
expenditures incurred by the State on the County's behalf.
The FY 2008 and FY 2009 budgets for unemployment compensation expenses were established
at $56,000 and $80,000, respectively. During the FY09 budget preparation process the County
had received two quarterly invoices for unemployment compensation. The total of the two
invoices was $40,959.27. At the end of the fiscal 2008 budget year, the County received one
invoice which covered the past two quarters. That invoice was for $8 I ,000.95 and required a
budget amendment in the amount of $66,000 for a total cost of $121,960.22 for the FY 2008
budget year.
The County recently received a quarterly invoice in the amount of $97,510.18. Based on this
invoice and the economic uncertainty that may compel most of the former employees who are
collecting unemployment compensation to do so for the remaining portion of the period that they
are eligible, a budget amendment is necessary to not only cover the costs for the first quarter but
also for the remainder of the fiscal year. It is therefore requested that the budget be increased by
$315,000 to a total of$395,000.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no Growth Management Impact associated
with this Executive Summary.
FISCAL IMPACT: A budget amendment is necessary to reduce the General Fund (001)
Reserves budget by $315,000 and increase the budget in Other General Administrative by a like
amount to fund anticipated unemployment compensation expenses.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners authorizes a budget
amendment in the amount of $3 I 5,000 to fund anticipated unemployment compensation
expenses.
