Backup Documents 03/24/2009 Item # 4I '41 PROCLAMA TION WHEREAS, the annual number of people killed in motor vehicle crashes in work zones was over 835 in 2007 and more than 40,000 people are injured each year as a result of motor vehicle crashes in work zones; and, WHEREAS, an estimated 12 billion vehicle ml1es of travel each year will be through active work zones; and, WHEREAS, a national campaign is conducted every year at the start of the construction season to attract national attention to drive carefully through highway construction and repair sites; and, WHEREAS, this campaign is credited with helping to reduce work zone fatalities by almost 30% (1,186 in 2002) over the past five years by better educating the traveling public to "Expect the Unexpected': pay attention to warning signs in construction work zones, obey road crew flaggers, as well as to not tailgate but to keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that April 6 - 10, 2009, be designated as National Work Zone Awareness Week 2009 and remind motorists to "Drive to Survive - Our Future is Riding on it" DONE AND ORDERED THIS 2Jfh Day of March, 2009.
