Backup Documents 04/28/2009 Item # 4C PROCLAMA TION 4C fellow citizens in Collier County Florida and WHEREAS, Norman Nadel has enriched the cultural lives of his elsewhere in the United States: and, WHEREAS, Norman Nadel has mastered the art of aging, serving as a role model and an inspiration for all Collier County retirees by continuing his productive and contributive life into his mid-nineties: and, WHEREAS, he has been a life-long journalist and is proud to call himself a newspaperman - beginning with his career at the Columbus, Ohio Citizen as a music, drama, and early Hollywood film critic. Later he became a drama critic for the New York World- Telegram and Sun, held various offices in organizations related to the theatre, and lectured at a number of universities in the U.S., Canada, and England, and authored a history of the Theatre Guild. In this capacity he became the trusted friend of many prominent figures in these arts: and, WHEREAS, he has contributed to the musical arena as co-founder and later principle trombonist of the Columbus Philharmonic Orchestra and by serving as a U.S. Army bandmaster in World War II: and, WHEREAS, he parlayed photography (which he was taught by his father, who worked with Thomas Edison in New Jersey) into a skill level and art form, which he has exhibited in photographs and collections in numerous galleries throughout the United States: and, WHEREAS, a lover of boating, he mastered and practiced the art and joy of sailing, pawerboating, canoeing, and kayaking: and, WHEREAS, in retirement, he has continued to use his skills for the beffertnent of the communities where he lives. Initially retiring in Maine at age 65, he became active in writing for Bar Harbor concert series and local newspapers. He was recruited by Myra Daniels and became a seasonal Naples resident where he served as editor of The Phil (the program magazine) for eight years, developing a high-quality publication worthy of any prominent orchestra: and, WHEREAS, Norman Nadel continues to grow and contribute. He shares two residences and an active life with his wife, Maureen Armour, herself an activist and volunteer, who he married in 1998. An avid reader, he enjoys two daily newspapers, half a dozen magazines and a steady progression of books. A specific interest is the Bible, which he has read and continues to probe in addition to reading related books: and, WHEREAS, at age 93, he works diligently to remain fit and contributive. While he no longer ventures onto the water, he exercises on his rowing machine while listening to clossical music. He recently and reluctantly transitioned from film to digital photography. He is sustained by the beauty of all the arts, from beloved paintings and photographs an the walls, to the music of the concert hall and the drama of stage and film. He is willing to share his knowledge and experience with others enriching their lives and increasing their understanding of the development of many uniquely American art farms. Narman Nadel is a master at the art of aging: and, WHEREAS, May is Older Americans Month. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Baard of County Commissioners of Callier County, Florida, that April 28, 2009, be designated as Norman Nadel Day DONE AND ORDERED THIS 28th Day of April, 2009.
