Backup Documents 06/23/2009 Item # 4A PROCLAMA TION ~t'4A WHEREAS, NASA has announced the retirement of the Space Transportation System (STS) known popularly as the Space Shuttle in the year 2010,' and, WHEREAS, NASA has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to obtain input from educational institutions, science museums, and other appropriate organizations about the communities' abl'lity to acquire and publicly display a Space Shuttle Orbiter after conclusion of the Space Shuttle program,' and, WHEREAS, Basik Development submitted an application in accordance with the RFI provisions proposing a portion of the 20-acre site known as Naples Big Cypress Market Place, as a candidate site for the display of a Space Shuttle Orbiter,' and, WHEREAS, the proposed sites proximity to State and National Parks, as well as being close to two major tourist destinations, Naples and MiamI: thus offering outstanding national and international exposure,' and, WHEREAS, the proposed site would offer tremendous synergy with the current educational and tourism opportunities within the geographic area, including Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, and the Naples Holocaust Museum, of which all are located within 30 minutes,' and, WHEREAS, using the proposed site is an opportunity to bring Space exploration and ecology together with the Space Shuttle serving as a dramatic symbol of the partnership between science and the environment,. and, WHEREAS, the Space Shuttle would represent a new and very unique destination, promoting increased tourism opportunities for Collier County along with the educational and patriotic opportunities,' and, WHEREAS, Basik Development is commended for the initiative in presenting this opportunity to Collier County with the hope that in moving the RFI forward, the assistance and support of the Collier County business and government will make this an achievable endeavor. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that we congratulate Sasik Development for its endeavor in trying to bring to Collier County a symbol of technology that represents the United States of America leading the world in a quest for knowledge and benefits to both our nation and world.
