Backup Documents 07/28/2009 Item # 4D ~ ,40 PROCLAMA TION WHEREAS, a community in which breastfeeding is the norm enjoys health consequences that reverberate throughout the community,' and, WHEREAS, all available knowledge indicates that breastfeeding enhances optimal brain development provided by nutrients and interaction and protects babies from illness that can cause malnutrition, learning, and hearing difficulties,' and, WHEREAS, in Collier County, preparedness for emergencies is important and being able to continue breastfeeding can bring comfort and a sense of normalcy, even in stressful situations, that would be otherwise devastating for families that rely on access to formula, sanitation, and refrigeration when the established supply for the baby is bottled milk,' and, WHEREAS, for breastfeeding to become a cultural norm once more, it is important to include basic facts about breastfeeding in the educational system,' and, WHEREAS, breastfeeding is recognized by major medical organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Diabetic Association, the National Association of WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Directors, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) and WHO (World Health Organization),' and, WHEREAS, La Leche League in the USA celebrates World Breastfeeding Week as part of a Global initiative on the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding with more than 120 countries participating. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that August, 2009 be designated as BREASTFEEDING AWARENESS MONTH with special emphasis on breastfeeding promotion and urge all citizens to join us in seeking reliable nutrition and supporting breastfeeding as a high priority for healthier babies in Collier County.
