Backup Documents 09/29/2009 Item # 4B ~e ,. .~~. ~ PROCLAMA TION WHEREAS, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge is part of the largest expanse of mangrove forest in North America and with its 35, 000 acres provides habitats for a rich diversity of native wildlife, including several endangered species,' and, WHEREAS, a maze of mangrove islands and waterways defines the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, these islands covered in mangrove trees serve as roosts for birds and nurseries for fish, in addition it has narrow beaches lying along the Gulf of Mexico,' and, WHEREAS, mangrove and marsh habitats attract hundreds of species of wildlife with as many as J 0,000 wading birds roosting on its small islands, female sea turtles resting on the beaches, manatees feeding within the estuaries, bald eagles soaring over the open water, the rare mangrove cuckoo and black-whiskered vireo making their homes within the diverse habitats,' and, WHEREAS, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service are committed to provide greater access to this beautiful wildlif. and hoWl c()fl$tructcd a new parking lot and will soon complete an obsllrVation tower,' and, WHEREAS, the advantages of this improved access and viewing facility will add to the amenities provided to waterfowl hunters, fishermllfl, other recreational users and the many tourists who come to view this wDllderful Mtural environment. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that the week of October J 0, 2009, be designated as NA TIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE WEEK DONE AND ORDERED THrS 29th Day of September, 2009.
