Resolution 2002-334 RESOLUTION NO. 2002-~ A RESOLUTION COMMENDING FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY AND THE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY IN COLLIER COUNTY FOR ENGAGING IN A "LIVING WAGE"IFAIR PRICE/AGRICULTURAL ISSUES FORUM AND DIALOGUE WHEREAS, for a number of years, the Collier County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board ("HAAB") has received information at public meetings regarding difficult conditions for both growers and farm workers in the Immokalee area; and WHEREAS, the HAAB has also received information that problems faced by various sectors of the agricultural industry have resulting impacts on Hispanics as well as the entire Immokalee community; and WHEREAS, a related matter was previously brought to the attention of the prior Board of County Commissioners ("Board"). The Board chose not to act because it viewed the matter as a private sector labor dispute. However, the HAAB has found that conditions exist in the Immokalee area that present opportunities for free enterprise solutions if agricultural representatives will meet to begin to discuss the possibilities; and WHEREAS, the HAAB has learned of a potential solution to the agricultural crisis. Specifically, the "Living Wage" concept is a voluntary program under which produce would be labeled with a "Living Wage" label that would motivate consumers to pay slightly more for Fair Price/USA grown produce which is safer and healthier to eat and which benefits American workers and businesses; and WHEREAS, information received by the HAAB indicates that the Florida Gulf Coast University is willing to host a forum involving agricultural issues and solutions through the "Living Wage" profit motivated concept; and WHEREAS; the HAAB recommends that the Board recognize and commend Florida Gulf Coast University and the various sectors of the agricultural industry in Collier County for their willingness to discuss "Living Wage"/Fair Price/Agricultural issues through a forum and dialogue. Said recommendation to the HAAB does not extend to having the Board involve itself in the dialogue or in the forum. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that: The Collier County Board of County Commissioners hereby recognizes and commends Florida Gulf Coast University and those representatives of growers, workers, consumers, buyers, brokers and retailers from Southwest Florida who are willing to explore and discuss the concept of a business promotion program that promotes "Living Wage"/Fair Price/Agricultural Issues. The Board further recognizes and commends said parties for seeking to improve living and economic conditions for all members of the agricultural and general community in Southwest Florida. This Resolution adopted after motion, second and majority vote. 9A DATED: 7/oo/lJ~ ,.\.,...\~'lH;:I' Iljl'",~, ,....'.. "'''J~'' .,.f)j.;":~t ""'" '. ~~....,. t>,.'. ~ A"'V,,,sT' "'."
