EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve the electronic submittal of the (NFC) Fitness Grant
application in the amount of $90,000 for fitness courts associated with the Collier County
Sports Complex and Events Center, North Collier Regional Park, and B ig Corkscrew
Island Regional Park.
OBJECTIVE: To provide outdoor fitness and recreation for users of all abilities to be
incorporated in three regional parks.
CONSIDERATION: Staff were approached by the National Fitness Campaign (NFC) to
participate in a grant opportunity to establish “Fitness Courts” within Collier County. As part of
the NFC the concept began in 1979, with the goal of encouraging healthy lifestyles by
providing for outdoor gyms for participants. The program is sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank
and has over 4,000 communities and more than 100 sponsors participating.
The Fitness Court is a body weight circuit training system designed for adults of all ages and
abilities. Each Fitness Court is integrated with shock-resistant sports flooring and is comprised
of exercise stations that allow for up to 28 individuals to use the Court at the same time. The
equipment is designed that will complement the active space at the Great Lawn associated with
the Collier County Sports Complex and Events Center; area adjoining the soccer fields at North
Collier Regional Park; and with the great lawn associated with Big Corkscrew Island Regional
Park.
National Fitness Campaign’s outdoor bodyweight circuit-training system features a series of full-
body exercises that can be completed in just seven minutes. The 7 Movements in 7 Minutes is a
simple, yet powerful workout created for a range of athletic abilities and is optimally performed
on the Fitness Court. Developed by experts in the field, each exercise takes 45 seconds, with a
15-second interlude between sets, and is shown to burn more calories per minute than most other
forms of exercise.
The Fitness Court accommodates a variety of skill levels and abilities at each station, from
beginner to expert. Each piece of equipment allows users to leverage their bodyweight at
different angles and levels of resistance as a tool to improve over time. The possibilities for
custom movements and routines are endless. The Fitness Court App makes it easy to personalize
each workout. A user can scroll through how-to videos to learn the basics of every routine, then
listen to the heart-pumping guided circuits, led by personal trainers to get you moving. The
Fitness Court builds community while being fun to use.

ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDATION: The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
voted 6-0 in favor of pursuing the grant on June 19, 2019.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funds are available for the local contribution for each grant within Parks
Capital Fund (306) for North Collier Regional Park; Parks Impact Fee Fund (346) for Big
Corkscrew Island Regional Park; and Sports Complex Capital Fund (370) for the Collier County
Sports Complex and Events Center. The source of funding are the General Fund (for fund 306),
parks impact fees (for fund 346) and bond proceeds/tourist development tax (for fund 370).
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no impact to the Growth Management Plan
related to this action.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved for form and legality and requires a
majority vote for Board action. - JAB
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners approves the electronic
submittal of the grant application in the amount of $90,000 from NFC Fitness for the
establishment of Fitness Courts at the Collier County Sports Complex and Events Center, North
Collier Regional Park, and Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park.
