Agenda 11/10/2009 Item # 4B Agenda Item No. 48 ibvember 10. 2009 Page 1 of 2 t:.30CLAMA TIOIv l1/HEREAS, c::ch )'ca,- :;inc.:! 1926, the United States of America has set aside a national day C'f commemoration to honor the men and women who have served in our Nation's Armed Forces and to express our appreciation for their service in times of peace and war; and, WHEREAS, once ceiebratea as Armistice Day to recognize the end of World War I in 1919, November I1fh marks this official observance - now known as Veteran s Day - which respectfulfy pays tribute to all of olJr soldiers, sailors. airmen, Marines and Coust Guards, who throughout the history of our great Nation, have held a vital role in defending America and preserving freedom and peace around the world: and, WHEREAS, mare than 48 million men and women have served in our Armed Forces, from the founding days of our Nation through the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the broader global war on terrorism, and nearly half of them are alive tCJday, including a large number in Collier County; and, WHEREAS, on Veterans Day, we acknowledge with grateful appreciation what our veterans have done and today',,' men and women in uniform are continuing to do - to make America' and the world a better, safer and more peaceful place in which to live and raise our families; and, WHEREAS, we owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to these special citizens, our vete,-ans, who, through great personal sacrifice, have defeated brutal foes, liberated oppressed people and defended our democratic ideals, and today we join together as one County, State and Nation to honor the legacy of selfless contributions made by countless military veterans. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Col/ier County, Florida, that November 11, 2009, be designated as VETERANS DAY DONE AND ORDERED THIS j(JI' day of November, 2009.
