PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, this nation's drug problem is all about children, the tragedy of a child's
substance abuse Irrespective of It being alcohol, prescription drugs, or
nicotine, can strike any fami'ly: and,
WHEREAS, 15 years of surveys. conducted by The National Center on Addiction and
Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia Vniversity, have consistently found
that the more often chi'ldren and teenagers eat dinner with their
fami'lies, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, and use illegal drugs:
and,
WHEREAS, frequent faml1y dining is associated with lower rates of teen smoking,
drinking, illegal drug use, and prescription drug abuse: and,
WHEREAS, eating dinner together regularly Is a reflection of strong family ties, a
desire to communicate and share witfl other family members, and a
generally well-functioning family: and, .,
WHEREAS, families who have interactions as can be enjoyed at a dinner table serve
as support systems for children and teenagers, instilling values that last
a lifetime: and,

WHEREAS, family dinners have long constituted a stJbstantial pillar of famJ'ly life in
America.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that September 28 th, 2009, be designated as
FamJ1y Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Chlldren™
