WHFREAS, Collier County actively encourages bicycling as an important mDde of
transportation in prt!Serving quality of life: and.
WHEREAS, the month of May is Natjonal Bike Month and May J!1', 2009 is Na1'ional Bike
to Work Day, promDting and celebrating the joys and benefits of bicycling for
transportation and recreation, particularly pertinent to cyclists in Collier
County who enjoy optimum riding conditions because of the temperate climate,'
and,
WHEREAS, the CoINer County Transportation Services Division, Community Traffic Safety
Team, Naples Pathways Coalition, and numerous other community members have
worked d;li~ntly Dver the past y~ars to improve cycling conditions on our
roadways, to educate the public about bicycling, and to promote safe bicycling
for recreation and transportation; and,
WHEREAS, the Community Traffic Safety Team recently applied for $615.000.00 of "Safe
Routes to School" funding for two separate projects, one in Immokalee and
one in the vicinity of Shadow/awn Elementary S~hool to solve existing safety
concerns for children: and,
WHEREAS, four bicycle/pedestrian bridges have been built recently in Golden Gate and ()n
Vanderbilt Drive in order to address the lack of bicycle and pedestrian bridges
in those areas; and.
NOW TI-IEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida. that A1ay 15'''. 2009 be designated as
NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK DAY'
and the month of May, 2009, be designated as
NA TIONAL BIKE MONTH
in Collier County, encouraging every citizen of this community to ride a bike to
school, to work, to shop or to any of the events planned for National Bike
Month and National Bike to Work Day, and join fel/ow residimts in sharing this
healthy and pollution-free form of transportation, and ask that 01/ motorists
drive with extra CON! during this time, while tht!!y share the road.
