P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the month of May is National Bicycle Month; and,
WHEREAS, bicycling plays an important role in the lives of millions of Floridians;
and,
WHEREAS, bicycle usage promotes health and wellness and helps to encourage
citizens to develop habits of physical activity to become or stay fit;
and,
WHEREAS, riding bicycles increases roadway and parking capacities by reducing
the number of cars on the roads; and,
WHEREAS, Naples Pathways Coalition conducts the Lights for Bikes Program,
funded by the Community Foundation of Collier County, to provide bike
lights, safety gear, and language appropriate safety information to
low-income commuter cyclists who bike to work between dusk and dawn;
and,
WHEREAS, Naples Pathways Coalition members and supporters participate in the
annual Ride of Silence the third Wednesday each May to honor and
remember the many cyclists who have been killed while biking; and,
WHEREAS, Naples Pathways Coalition partners with the Collier Metropolitan
Planning Organization to publish a county-wide Bicycle & Tourism Map
to better equip residents and tourists to choose active transportation;
and,
WHEREAS, Naples Pathways Coalition has received the Special Recognition of the
Year Award from the Florida Bicycle Association.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that May 2019 be designated as
NATIONAL BIKE MONTH IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 14th Day of May 2019.
