PI/OCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, Naples Cultural Landscape and its educational arm, Naples Backyard History, in
cooperation with the Economic Development Council, Convention Visitors Bureau,
the Greater Naples and cverglades, Marco Island, and Immoka/ee Chambers of
Commerce, are calling upon the citizens of the great County of Collier to
recognize May 8 as the official birth of this great County of Collier.: and.
WHEREAS. on May 8, 192J, the Florida State Legislature approved the new county of
Collier, naming it after Barron Gift Collier, III: and,
WHEREAS, Barron Colliers past, present, and future caretakers Were, are, and wI'll be intent
upon safeguarding the unique memories of our Pioneers who made and continue to
make our county a better place to live and a charming place to visit: anct
WHEREAS, the pioneering families and old timers who seffled here and were born of the
passion to make their town beffer for all call upon all of our citizens to join in
learning about the unique history of these individuals, as well as the history in
their own back yard: anct
WHEREAS, upon the memory of Barron Collier, III. Collier County's past caretakers, and
the desire qf the present stewards of the great Caunty of Collier, we call upon
all to celebrate the Countys heritage, culture, and memories on this special
birthday celebration: and, .
WHEREAS, the Smithsonian Institutes Cultural-Heritage Tourism study determined
approximately 68% of guests to a destination city chose "authenticH areas as
their first choice to visit - May w1'll become an economic opportunity for the
County of Collier and its supporting museums, parks, and preserves located in the
diverse areas incorporating the County of Collier: Greater Naples, Marco Islanct
Goodlantl, Everglades City, Chokoloskee, HWY 29 and Immokalee: and,
WHEREAS, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguard and promote our defining cultural
landscapes, our unique history and heritage, that have and wi/I continue to
distinguish the great County of Collier as the.preeminent destination In Southwest
Florida to visit, the world class place to locate a business and the county that
takes pride in showcasing the ![logic in' this place that we have the honor qf calling
home.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florido, thot Moy 8th. 2009 be designated as the
Official 85'" Year When Collier County Was Birthed
