EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation that the Board of County Commissioners, approves and
authorizes the Chairman to sign the submittal of a Volunteer Fire
Assistance grant application in the amount of $10,500 to the Florida
Division of Forestry for the purpose of refurbishing two 1994 6X6 five ton
vehicles.
OBJECTIVE: To obtain Board of County Commissioners approval to submit and
authorize the Chainnan to sign an application for a Volunteer Fire Assistance matching
(50/50) grant in the amount of $ I 0,500 for the purpose of refurbishing two 1994 6X6 five
ton vehicles.
CONSIDERATIONS: Ochopee Fire Control District ("Ochopee") has received this type
of grant from the Florida Division of Forestry for the past 31 years. The grant has becn
used to purchase equipment to improve firefighter safety and firefighting capabilities.
Oehopee returned the 1959 vehicle on loan back to Forestry last year and the 1955
vehicle will be sent back this year for retirement. We have since acquired two 1994 6X6
five ton vehicles from the Division of Forestry that need refurbishing prior to use on
brush fires. A skid unit that Ochopee has at this. time will be installed on one of the
vehicles but will need refw'bishing. A watcr tank and pump need to be installed on the
other truck; also additional maintenance is required prior to putting the brush trucks in
service. The 50/50 grant will allow Ochopee to do thc necessary refurbishment and is
especially beneficial due to the cuncnt and future budget constraints.
These vehicles will be crucial this year; expel1s are predicting drought conditions to
persist this year well into mid-summer. I f this scenmio occurs there is the possibility of
311 active brush firc season. Ensuring this equipment is in good working condition will
boost Ochopee's resources increasing fire protection of life and property in the
eventuality the forecast is coneel.
FISCAL IMPACT: The total cost ofrefurbishing the vehicles is $10,500. As this is a
50/50 matching grant, the Division of Forestry will pay $5,250 leaving the Ochopee Fire
Control District to provide $5,250 from Reserves Fund 146 (Ochopee Fire Control).
Following award, budget amendments will be needed in order to transfer funds to Fund
118, Emergency Management 311d Fire Gr3l1ts.

associated with this Executive Summary.
