EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to award Bid No. 09-5156 to Stryker Sales Corporation for the purchase
of 30 stair chairs for Emergency Medical Services in the amount of $59,493.00.
OBJECTIVE: To provide updated, ergonomic cvacuation chairs to the Emergency Medical
Services' (EMS) ambulances.
CONSIDERATIONS: On Scp1cinhcr 9, 200g, Agenda Hem 16F9. the Boaid approved an
Assistance to Firefightcrs Grant Agrccmcnt from FEMA and rccognizcd and appropriatcd the
funds for the purchase of 30 stair chairs for EMS ambulances.
On November 24, 2008 bids wcre solicited by the Purchasing Departmcnt. The requests for bid
wcre issued to 154 firms. A total of 5 firms rcsponded by the deadline of Deccmbcr 12, 2008.
The bid specifications called for the Stryker Stair Pro Model 6252. This modcl was spccified
due to its patented friction braking system that is not available from the other models. This
system allows more control due to the resistance when lowering a patient down stairs. The
heavier the patient, the more resistance is applied when lowering and provides less injury
potential to EMS Staff.
Two firms bid exceptions to the bid specifications (the Femo model) for a lower price, Femo
was $2,493.00 lower than the Iotal Stryker Sales Corporation bid and Hcnry Schein was
$1,173.00 lower. The two bids do not contain the same like features and accessories as the
Stryker Chairs. The Strykcr Sales Corporation is the only bidder who me! the specifications.
FISCAL IMPAeT: Funds in thc amount $47,594.40 are provided through FEMA under the
AFG Grant. Matching funds in the amount of 5;] 1,898.60 are budgeted in EMS Fund 490 for
FY09.
LEGAL CONSIDERA nON: This item raises no legal Issues. This is a non quasi-judicial
matter requiring simple majority vote. .1AK
GROWTH IMPACT: There is no Growth Management Impact resulting li'om this action.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners approves the award of Bid
09-5156 to Stryker Sales Corporation in the amount of 559,493.
