Backup Documents 04/23/2019 Item # 4D 4D PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, "A National Day of Prayer" is a day set aside by Congress for all Americans to pray and reaffirm the spiritual principles upon which this nation was founded; and, WHEREAS, national days of prayer were called for by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 and was first established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863; and, WHEREAS, in 1952, Congress unanimously voted to establish a National Day of Prayer. The day was made official when President Harry S. Truman signed it into law; and, WHEREAS, in 1988 Congress and President Ronald Reagan amended the law to designate the first Thursday in May as "National Day of Prayer"; and, WHEREAS, prayer has comforted us in times of sorrow and given us strength and hope for the future. We ask God to keep His hand upon us and bless Collier County, the great State of Florida and the United States of America; and, WHEREAS, this year is the 68th anniversary of the consecutive annual observance of the National Day of Prayer and the theme, "Love One Another," is based on John 13:34; and, WHEREAS, National Day of Prayer gives us an opportunity to come together as a community and pray for our community, our nation, and our world. There are large gatherings on the Mall in Washington D.C., and in thousands of cities across America; and, WHEREAS, local events are being held on May 2, 2019, at locations in Collier County. All are invited to attend. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that May 2, 2019, be designated as NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 23rd Day of April 2019.
