Backup Documents 02/12/2019 Item # 4B 4 3 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the citizens of Collier County stand firmly committed to promoting education for its children and their future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of the future, and their ability to compete in a global economy; and, WHEREAS, in 2013, Myra Janco Daniels responded to the plight of more than 10,000 Collier County school children who came home every day to an empty house by forming the Latchkey League with the commitment to raise funds for at-risk children participating in after-school programs; and, WHEREAS, the mission of the Latchkey League is to support and provide educational, cultural and recreational services to children in need of after-school supervision and activities and to promote educational development for their future; and, WHEREAS, Mrs. Daniels chaired a capital campaign to raise $5 million dollars for the construction of The Salvation Army's Fran Cohen Youth Center; and, WHEREAS, the Latchkey League provides fundraising opportunities throughout the season to financially support latchkey children attending after-school programs that provide opportunities for children to explore dance, music, art and theater in addition to actively mentoring and tutoring them where possible. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed that the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, recognizes the Latchkey League and its founder Myra Janco Daniels for a demonstrable commitment to our community to engage in programs and activities that enhance after school educational opportunities for our youth.
