EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve the Sponsorship Agreement between Collier County and Spirit
Promotions for the 2019-2021 US Open Pickleball Championships and make a finding that this
item promotes tourism.
OBJECTIVE: Recommend the sponsorship of the US Open Pickleball Championships in Collier
County for the years 2019, 2020 and 2021.
CONSIDERATIONS: Pickleball has become a very fast-growing sport in Collier County, and the US
Open Pickleball Championships have been a major factor in that growth. This event promises to bring a
record number of participants and fans to Collier County in April of the next three years.
This Sponsorship Agreement covers the 2019, 2020 and 2021 US Open Pickleball Championships. The
terms and conditions are spelled out in Paragraph 3 A and outlines three payment installments totaling
$345,000. Spirit Promotions will provide Collier County with an invoice for each of the three
installments. In short, each year the installments are as follows:
• Installment # 1 in the amount of $45,000 is payable to Spirit Promotions within 45 days of the
start of the registration for the US Open Pickleball Championships.
• Installment # 2 in the amount of $185,000 is payable to Spirit Promotions within 45 days from
the conclusion of each year’s US Open Pickleball Championships.
• Installment # 3 in the amount of $115,000 shall be paid to Spirit Promotions upon receipt of
evidence of the Championships being broadcast, and documentation of the overnight
accommodations stays and direct visitor spending by participants and spectators.
Collier County will assist Spirit Promotions in the hosting of the US Open Pickleball Championships with
year-round promotion of the event on the Sports Tourism website, Facebook and Twitter channels; PR
and media assistance in promoting the Championships and assistance with permitting and hotel
accommodation arrangements.
FISCAL IMPACT: $345,000 is available in TDC Fund (184) in the Board approved FY 19 Tourism
Division budget for sports marketing.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no impact to the Growth Management Plan with this
Executive Summary.
ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDATION: The Tourist Development Council recommended
approval of this item 9-0 at the January 28, 2019 meeting.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved as to form and legality and requires majority vote
for approval. - CMG
