EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve Tourist Development Tax Promotion Funds to support eight
upcoming March and April 2019 Sports Tourism Events up to $49,450 and make a finding that this
expenditure promotes tourism.
OBJECTIVE: To attract visitors to Collier County through Sports Tourism.
CONSIDERATIONS: Collier County is scheduled to host the following eight Sports Tourism Events in
March and April 2019. The Tourism Division Sports Marketing Team has attracted these events to our
community. The hosting costs are based on past experience, the event funding application requests, and
projected room nights from the event organizers. Event expenditures are the responsibility of the
organizer. The Tourism Division proposes to reimburse the event organizer for field and court rental
costs, officials fees and operation support expenses based on room night visitation delivered to Collier
County from the event participants and fans. These expenditures are authorized to be reimbursed through
the BCC approved Sports Assistance Program.
Staff utilizes the BCC approved Event Application form (attached) to determine the appropriate amount
of recommended funding based on an acquisition cost of fifteen dollars per room night, which is a sports
tourism industry standard. Funding for these sports tourism events are subject to TDC recommendation
and Board approval.
Southern Tropics Pickleball will take place March 8-10, 2019. This is an adult pickleball event taking
place for the 4th year at East Naples Community Park. The event will feature 600 athletes and is projected
to generate 350 room nights, direct spending of $153,877 and TDT revenue of $2,613. In 2018, the event
did not return the necessary documents to calculate economic impact and TDT and therefor e received no
Tourist Development Tax funding. The expenses to be paid for this event will be assistance with a facility
rental to East Naples Community Park up to $4,950, and park staff overtime up to $1,500 totaling up to
$5,250 in reimbursable expenses based on 350 room nights.

Azzuri Storm Spring Shootout will take place March 30-31, 2019. This is a youth boys and girls soccer
event taking place for the 5th year in Naples at North Collier Regional Park. The event will feature 1,800
athletes and is projected to generate 500 room nights, direct spending of $495,988 and TDT revenue of
$3,821. The expenses to be paid for this event will be assistance with facility rental up to $3,200, event
operational assistance up to $2,700, and park staff overtime up to $1,600.00 totaling up to $7,500 in
reimbursable expenses.

Alligator Alley Baseball will take place April 5-7, 2019. This is a competitive baseball event taking
place for the 7th year at North Collier Regional Park, Veterans Park and Golden Gate Park. The event will
feature an estimated 400 athletes and is projected to generate 300 room nights, direct spending of
$163,224 and TDT revenue of $2,213 The expenses for this event are assistance with facility rental up to
$4,500 totaling up to $4,500 in reimbursable expenses.

FYSA Presidents Cup - Florida Fire will take place March 16-17, 2019. This is a boys and girls soccer
event taking place for 30 years and in Naples for the 1st year. The event will feature an estimated 500
athletes and is projected to generate 400 room nights, direct spending of $210,219 and TDT revenue of
$2,947. The expenses to be paid for this event will be assistance with facility rental up to $3,200 and park
staff overtime up to $1,800 totaling up to $6,000 in reimbursable expenses. ** Note: Florida Fire has
placed a deposit on NCRP fields for the dates of March 23-24, 2019 as rain dates for this event.

Adidas Spring Classic - Florida Fire will take place April 27-28, 2019. This is a boys and girls soccer
event taking place for the 6th year in Naples. The event will feature 1,200 athletes and is projected to
generate 350 room nights, direct spending of $182,532 and TDT revenue of $2,593. The expenses to be
paid for this event will be assistance with facility rental up to $3,200 and park staff overtime up to $1,800
totaling up to $5,250 in reimbursable expenses.

National Junior USTA L3 will take place March 23-25, 2019. This is a 3rd year tennis event featuring
Junior doubles and singles competition at Naples Bath & Tennis Club. The event will feature 150 athl etes
and is projected to generate 250 room nights in the County, direct spending of $133,005 and TDT revenue
of $1,844. The expenses to be paid for this event will be assistance with officials’ fees up to $1,500, event
marketing and production fees up to $2,300 totaling up to $3,750 based on 250 room nights.

USTA National Singles Clay Court Championship will take place March 29-31, 2019. This is the 2nd
year for the event at Naples Bath & Tennis Club. The event rotates every other year with Surprise,
Arizona. The event will feature 300 athletes and is projected to generate 350 room nights in the County,
direct spending of $155,559 and TDT Revenue of $2,592. The expenses to be paid for this event will be
assistance with officials’ fees up to $2,000, marketing and production fees up to $3,300 totaling up to
$5,250 in reimbursable expenses based on 350 room nights.

ADVISORY BOARD RECOMMENDATION: The Tourist Development Council recommended
approval of this item 9-0 at the January 28, 2019 meeting.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funding of up to $42,750 for reimbursable event expenses including field or court
rental fees, operating expenses and marketing expenses, plus $6,700 for event staff overtime for a total of
$49,450 for these eight sports tourism events is included in the BCC approved FY 19 Tourism Division
budget of $540,000 for sports marketing event support and $72,000 for staff overtime in Fund 184. These
above expenditures will leave a balance in the Event Support Budget of $390,450 and $43,800 in the Staff
Overtime Budget.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no impact to the Growth Management Plan with this
Executive Summary.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved as to form and legality and requires majority vote
for approval. - CMG
