EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to authorize a budget amendment in the amount of $150,000 from the Clerk’s
Court Agency Fund 651 to the Sheriff for criminal justice training and educational expenses in
accordance with Section 938.15, Florida Statutes.
OBJECTIVE: To seek consent from the Board of County Commissioners to authorize a budget
amendment to reimburse the Sheriff for allowable training and education expenses.
CONSIDERATIONS: In accordance with Section 318.18(11)(c), Florida Statues, a $2.50 court cost
must be paid for each traffic infraction. The money is to be used to help pay for criminal justice
education and training programs pursuant to Section 938.15, Florida Statutes. Officers and agency
support personnel may attend criminal justice workshops, meetings, conferences, and conventions.
Section 938.15, FS, requires that a form approved by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training
Commission be used by the Sheriff showing the purpose of the workshop, meeting, conference or
convention, the direct relationship of the training to the officer’s job, the direct benefit of the officer and
the agency (Sheriff) will receive, all anticipated costs and be approved by the agency administrator prior
to attendance.
FISCAL IMPACT: A budget amendment in the amount of $150,000 is needed to recognize a transfer
from the Court’s Agency Fund 651 and to appropriate training and educational expenses within the
General Fund. Once budget is provided, the Sheriff may seek reimbursement for allowable training and
educational expenses.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to
form and legality, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners authorize a budget amendment to
reimburse the Sheriff for allowable training and educational expenses in accordance with Section 938.15,
Florida Statutes.
