Backup Documents 09/28/2010 Item #16H 416H4 PROCLAMA TION WHEREAS, in 1844, George Williams launched the YMCA movement in London as a volunteer, and his example persists in the expansion of the Y across the globe. In the United States, early YMCA programs were run almost entirely by volunteers, and, WHEREAS, today, the Y engages more than 10, 000 neighborhoods across the U. S. and is the nation's leading nonprofit committed to helping people and communities to learn, grow and thrive, the contributions it makes to society are far - reaching, from influencing our notion's culture during times of profound social change to the individual support that is provided for adults learning to read; and, WHEREAS, by nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the notion's health and well- being, and supporting and serving our neighbors, the Y ensures that everyone has the opportunity to become healthier, more confident, connected and secure; and, WHEREAS, the pride Greater Marco Island shows in the Greater Marco YMCA has been demonstrated since its inception in 1977 by the commitment the community has given in ensuring the continued development of the facility and programs; and, WHEREAS, from that earlier date of 1844 the YMCA has never stopped developing and changing to match the very different needs and challenges of today's society and is reflected in the wonderful staff that is the foundation that allows the Greater Marco YMCA to be the best it can be by providing an environment to support the tenets of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility; and, WHEREAS, as a part of being a worldwide organization that is always changing and responding to today and tomorrow, they will now be known as the 'Y and celebrate 'A BRAND NEW DAY" NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that September 20, 2010 be designated as THE GREATER MARCO ISLAND COMMUNITY CELEBRATION OF THE Y DONE AND ORDERED THIS 17th Day of September, 2010 A TTEST: DWI T E.
