WHEREAS, in 2008 in Southwest Florida, more than 155 babies were stillborn or died before
their first birthday; and,
WHEREAS, research has shown that the majority of infant and fetal deaths are due to the
health of the mother before she gets pregnant; and,
WHEREAS, Healthy Start Coalition of Southwest Florida is a not - for - profit 501(c)(3) that has
served Collier, 6/ades, Hendry, and Lee Counties .since 1992 he /ping to ensure
pregnant women and babies have access to needed medical care and other community
services to help give their baby a Healthy Start in life; and
WHEREAS, today there are 30 Healthy Start Coalitions. Services are ava //able in all 67 counties
/n Florida, which serve as successful examples to privatizing a government program to
ensure grassroots decision - making to meet and monitor local needs; and
WHEREAS, Healthy Start of Southwest Florida has a variety of programs to help prevent infant
deaths and premature births and to promote health and developmental outcomes for
babies including: access to meth care for uninsured; nurse supervised home visiting
services; risk screening "'
